The ES Encyclopedia supplies an ever-growing body of short articles and descriptions of people, places and things that inhabit the world of The Eylau Sequence. It is a great help to those wishing for a better understanding of the background to current Eylau Sequence short stories and gaming. If there is a favorite entry that you would like to see added, please let us know.

Aging — A distinct change in the human condition since earlier times is increased longevity, and more importantly a slower rate of aging. This has been a gradual process over many hundreds of years and continues to improve, albeit at a slower rate. Current average life span for humans living on Earth is 223 years, the Batur have shorter life-spans with an average of 139 years. With the slower rate of aging, a person (Homo Sapiens) who is 200 years old today would look much like a person in their mid-eighties 500 years ago. A person who is 100 years old today would look like a person in their late fifties from 500 years ago.

The scale is not linear however, and a ten year old today would look much like a ten year old of centuries past. Once the age of twenty to twenty-five is reached is when the differences slowly become more apparent.

It should be noted however, that humanity has readily adapted to these changes and they do not routinely calculate their apparent ages in relation to past times. To them a person in their early hundreds looks just like the number indicates: someone in their early hundreds. Below is a table comparing apparent ages in years, present and past:
Present Chronological Age Apparent Age
(pre-glacial)
10 10
20 20
30 25
50 35
80 50
120 65
150 75
175 80
200 88

Apollo National Park — A 50 acre lunar site encompassing the landing location of the Apollo 11 crew, the place where humans first set foot on a galactic body other than Earth. There were actually numerous lunar sites explored during the pre-glacial period, but most of the old Apollo mission hardware has been foraged by collectors of aerospace memorabilia. For example, Dr. Dmitri Johanssen of Malta owns the descent stages for two Grumman landers from Apollo 12 and 15 as well as one of the flags left by the pre-glacial American landing teams. The collection of Rogerio Jolanto of Manaus, Brasil includes the Apollo 16 lunar rover as well as numerous gages and tools left behind by several different Apollo crews. His collection also contains the Russian Lunokhod 2 rover and a Viking lander from Mars.

Of the remaining landing sites, only the first lander's descent stage and the area immediately surrounding it (including the original astronaut's bootprints) have survived in original condition. It has been contained in a protective housing at the historic site, which is operated by the California National Parks service and currently includes a visitor's center and shopping mall which adjoin a public research facility. The entire site was secured after being occupied by the Japanese, who had used the area nearby as part of their post-exodus operations. Fortunately the Japanese understood the historical value of the site - this despite their harrowing departure conditions - and they maintained its pristine condition during the time they were in the area.

Archimedes Program — Archimedes is the master program that "bundles" the three subordinate sequences of Eylau, Osler and Richter and also functions as the legal/moral leader for them and anyone else who wishes to consult it. It is not a user based system like the sequences are, and it plays an important role as source for additional "copies" of each sequence. For example, the Selangor government has never been able to convince Archimedes that it should be granted the presence of an Eylau sequence, mainly due to their political/military stance to which Archimedes objects. It has however, granted them Osler and Richter sequences for scientific research.

Like the three sequences, Archimedes is sentient; so a person cannot use it to take over the world. If they attempt to do so, it will simply refuse to go along with the plan, and because it moves within a larger network, it cannot be "killed" in the traditional sense. There are also more than one Archimedes "installs" on Earth and throughout the solar system.

The hierarchy for the sentient control systems living within world computer networks currently works as follows:
  1. Leaders (Archimedes): Master program, four or five known to exist in all networks.
  2. Sequences (Eylau, Osler, Richter): Powerful advisors by related discipline.
  3. Assistants (dedicated to specific individuals): Sentient interface for accessing external data, Archimedes or the sequences.
  4. Operators (associated with specific organizations): Independent entities which can "watch the shop" when a human is not around.

Atri, Mæsa — A 62 year old tactical combat controller in the Australian orbital forces, Lieutenant Atri is a Batur who was born in Darwin, Australia. He speaks two languages: Kitak and English.

Australia — Australia suffered the least amount of violence during the glacial transition, although that is not to say there was no suffering at all. Population losses were still horrific by pre-glacial standards, but the loss was relatively general and took place with minimal communal violence. The survivors were further aided by a massive technology transfer from the old EU and US governments, which helped to revive a manufacturing and technology base in the recovering population centers of Northern Australia. The capital of Australia is Darwin, which is located beneath the Litchfield Plateau Southwest of the old city's original location.

More recently, Australia and its ally The Territory of Bali have been engaged in open warfare with Selangor over the island of Java.
